Skullgirls: Rising From the Grave

Skullgirls is a 2D fighting game that was released on Xbox 360 and PS3 in late spring, 2012. The original roster was all female and only comprised a grand total of eight characters. Skullgirls immediately received praise and sold quite well during it's release. Reverge Labs, the developers of Skullgirls, had planned to release the initial roster of fighters, and release free DLC characters over time. However, shortly after Skullgirls was released, the entire team was laid off.

Luckily, the developers refused to let their creation die.  Reverge Labs was reborn as Lab Zero Games, and the original publisher for Skullgirls still held the IP rights. This allowed Lab Zero to continue working on additional characters. Their only problem now was funding, so they turned to their fan base for support.

An Indiegogo fundraiser was started in hopes of funding one new DLC character, Squigly, for $150,000. Although the developers were not sure they would meet that goal, they released information about how the money would be spent. The graph below outlines the basic distribution.

Not only was Squigly funded in less than 24 hours, but by the time the fundraiser had ended, nearly $830,000 had been donated. Lab Zero has announced that an additional four characters will be made, as well as maps, story modes and music to accompany the new members of the roster.

Skullgirls is currently for sale via XBLA and PSN, and a PC version is currently being developed. Hopefully, continued support will allow Lab Zero to continue making games without having to worry about going bankrupt.

   Until next time.
